Message from the East April 2008 • Masonic News
Dear Brother,
Recently, I was able to access a website about genealogy called ancestry.com. For any of you who are interested in tracing your family tree, or seeing information about other people, this is the website for you. There are millions upon millions of documents available for you to view. I was able to see my grandfather’s World War I draft registration card, and able to print out a copy of it. I was able to see U.S. census records all the way up to 1940, find the addresses of where my relatives lived, and then able to go to another website and look at satellite pictures of where those people lived.
This technology and the information that can be gathered by using it would not have been available to the majority of people even ten years ago. Our world is truly changing at a rapid pace.
This month we will be conferring the Master Mason degree upon two candidates. The family tree of Mozart Lodge will continue to grow with the addition of these two new branches on our tree. We may not be able to see the results on a website in the future, but the effect on the lives of these candidates, and those whose lives they come into contact on a daily basis is something that can be seen and measured.
Our Masonic fraternity, while it may change its methods, presents truths and teachings which have existed “since time immemorial” and through the labors of each of us, they will continue on through generations yet unborn. Our degrees communicate these teachings to our candidates, and they remind us of the journey we made through the degrees of our gentle craft.
The greatest heritage that we, as Master Masons can present to future generations will be the preservation of the noble cause in which we are engaged, making the world a better place, one man at a time
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Jack Daugherty, WM

Message from the East - January 2008 • Masonic News
Dear Brother,
For the last 75 years, the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom has addressed his or her subjects through the Royal Christmas Message. It was first given by King George V on Christmas Day 1932, through what was then called the Empire Service, and is now known as the BBC World Service. At first only broadcast by radio, and then starting in 1957, by television, the Royal Christmas Message has been a tradition throughout the British Empire, and now the Commonwealth of Nations.
In 1998, Her Majesty’s Christmas Message first appeared on the Internet; in 2006 it was made available to be downloaded onto an iPod, and in 2007, it appeared on YouTube, which is a website where millions of video clips are available from all over the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Many different ways of communicating the same message………………that is the point of these remarks to you, my Brother. The teachings and principles of Freemasonry have been communicated in many different ways and methods down through the centuries. Some of the methods of communication are tried and true, and some are the most modern and up-to-date. More important than how communicate is WHAT we communicate. The message of Freemasonry needs to come through in all we say and do, each and every day of our lives.
You will see included in this trestleboard the ways your Gavel Club has communicated the message of Freemasonry during 2007. Please take note of the work they are doing………..good work, true work, square work. There are more designs on the trestleboard for Mozart Lodge #121 to communicate the message of Freemasonry in new and different ways, and to help all of us to convince the world of its good effects. Join with your brethren in communicating the message of Freemasonry in your lodge.
Happy New Year, and See you in Lodge
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Jack Daugherty, Worshipful Master

Message from the East December 2007 • Masonic News
Dear Brother,
As one year ends and another approaches, we are inspired to reach for higher goals in the year to come. Resolutions are easily made, but difficult to put into practice. That which we plan with great thought and care is often forgotten among the duties of our every day life.
Among the duties of every day life to the Master Mason is his duty to remember those in need, and to provide them with a portion of the blessings we have received from the Supreme Architect of the Universe. However, there are those who may be well provided for in the things of this world, but who are poor in spirit. They do not need help from our material blessing, but help from within our souls. To them we should be sharing a portion of our time, rather than a part of our wealth.
Our lives are so consumed with our daily vocations, the care of our families and loved ones, and what ever other activities we may be involved in that we find little, if any time, to honor our Masonic obligations to assist a Brother who may need a few moments of our time.
In 2008, let us resolve to honor the Masonic obligations that we assumed when we were raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason, and to give of our time to help, aid and assist others.
For Master Masons, there can be no greater honor that to fulfill our obligations to the gentle craft that we are privileged to be members of, and to give of ourselves to Brethren in need.
May you and your family have a Blessed Holiday Season, and Best Wishes for the year 2008.
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Jack Daugherty, Worshipful Master

The Masons make a bid for NASCAR. - By Seth Stevenson - Slate Magazine
A few weekends ago, I was strolling down my street in D.C. when I noticed something odd. No, not the massive Masonic temple adorned with a pair of stone sphinxes and an eerie ziggurat. (The temple’s certainly odd, but D.C. residents quickly stop noticing it.) Rather, what caught my eye was the scene in front of the temple: On the wide steps, beneath the sphinxes’ unnerving gaze, there sat a bright blue, NASCAR-style race car, looking entirely out of place—as though it had magically teleported to this spot from some tobacco-stained test track in North Carolina.
On the car’s hood—where you’d expect to find the logo of a famous brand, like Home Depot or Budweiser—there was a painting of an eagle with two heads. On the car’s side was a strange little glyph: a drafter’s compass crossed with a set square. On the rear bumper was written “ScottishRite.org.”
The Scottish Rite is a worldwide organization of Freemasons—the centuries-old fraternity that is sometimes accused of controlling “like, everything, man,” and counts among its members several founding fathers and a slew of presidents (including George Washington, both Roosevelts, and, more recently, Gerald Ford). The Rite’s global headquarters are housed in that giant, intimidating temple on my street. The compass with square is a traditional symbol of Freemasonry. None of which answers my real question: Why on earth are the Masons advertising on the hood of a stock car?

Fire Destroys Masonic Lodge Building In Downtown Poplarville, MS • Masonic News
Despite a steady rain, the stubborn, smokey fire still smoldered by late morning Thursday. The downtown inferno destroyed much of the 500 block of South Main in Poplarville.
Although the blaze claimed two historic buildings, a quick response from fire crews kept it from igniting any more of Poplarville’s downtown.
“Making sure we kept fire off of the exposures, which my guys did an excellent job. Kept it from spreading, kept it contained. There was nothing else we could do to the main fire building,” said fire chief Chris Foster.
The masons must build again. Sherrard Byrd Masonic Lodge 353 had barely bounced back from Katrina.
“We had extensive damage during Hurricane Katrina. We had $80,000 worth of damage. And we rebuilt that and had started over again. And it looks like we’ve got to start again now,” said Thomas Cumberland, who heads the Masonic Lodge. (more…)
